Calculating Net Salary in Kenya
Net pay is the take-home pay after statutory and voluntary deductions are subtracted from gross earnings.
In Kenya, computing net pay from gross pay requires three main statutory deductions:
- NSSF (National Social Security Fund): Deducted first from gross pay (up to KES 4,320 total contribution in 2025/2026).
- Affordable Housing Levy (AHL): Computed as 1.5% of the gross salary.
- SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund): Replaced NHIF and is calculated as 2.75% of the gross salary.
- PAYE (Pay As You Earn): Progressive income tax applied to taxable pay (gross pay minus pre-tax deductions), less KES 2,400 personal tax relief.
